Two hand bombs stored inside an abandoned house exploded in Bhadrakhola village of Ghatmajhi Union in Madaripur Sadar upazila on Sunday night, causing alarm among residents in the surrounding area. No casualties were reported in the incident.
The explosions took place on 13 September at an abandoned house belonging to local resident Alamgir Lapti. According to information available so far, two hand bombs had been kept inside the unused building. The circumstances surrounding their presence there, however, remain unclear.
Residents reportedly heard a sudden and loud explosion from the direction of the abandoned house. The sound prompted people in the vicinity to come out of their homes and move towards the location to find out what had happened. The incident caused concern in the area, particularly because the explosive devices had been kept inside a property that was not regularly occupied.
After being informed, police visited the site and inspected the abandoned house. Officers are now looking into how the hand bombs came to be there and who may have placed them inside the building.
The owner of the property, Alamgir Lapti, said he and his family had no knowledge of who had left the explosive devices in the abandoned house.
“We do not know who had left the hand bombs inside my abandoned house. After hearing the sound of the explosion, we came out of our new house. Later, we noticed the smell left by the exploded hand bombs,” he said.
The incident has raised questions about how the explosives were brought into and stored inside the unused property without the knowledge of those living nearby. Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the discovery and explosion as part of their investigation.
Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad confirmed that two hand bombs had exploded inside an old or abandoned house belonging to Alamgir Lapti.
He said nobody was injured in the incident and that an investigation was under way. Police are examining the possible cause of the explosions and trying to establish who was responsible for keeping the explosives at the location.
At this stage, authorities have not disclosed how long the hand bombs had been inside the house or whether anyone had previously noticed them. No arrests or identification of suspects have been reported in connection with the incident so far.
The investigation is expected to clarify whether the explosives were deliberately stored there or whether other circumstances led to their presence in the abandoned building. Police are continuing to examine the site and gather information about the incident.
Although the explosions caused considerable alarm because of the loud noise, the absence of injuries or deaths meant that the incident did not result in any reported human casualties. The focus now remains on determining the source of the hand bombs and identifying those responsible for placing them inside the abandoned house.
