Two people, including a young woman and a day labourer, have lost their lives in two separate road traffic accidents within a four-hour window along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal Upazila. The fatal incidents occurred on Tuesday, 8 September, at around 5:30 am and 9:45 am at distinct points along the busy thoroughfare.
Police officers and eyewitnesses reported that the second incident took place around 9:45 am in the Dorirampur area of Trishal municipality, specifically near the residence of former commissioner Saiful at a U-turn on the Dhaka-bound lane. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Marjia Khatun, was travelling on a traditional three-wheeled van alongside her aunt, Momina Khatun, 30, and her cousin, Chadni, 15. The group had departed from her father’s home in Churkhai Konapara under Kotwali Police Station and was heading towards Porabari Bazar under Trishal Police Station to consult a traditional practitioner.
As the van reached Dorirampur, Marjia accidentally lost her balance and tumbled onto the highway. An unidentified speeding bus travelling behind the vehicle struck her immediately, resulting in her instant death on the spot. Marjia was the wife of Tamim Miah, a resident of Charkumaria village under Dhanikhola Union in Trishal Upazila.
Earlier in the morning, at approximately 5:30 am, the first fatality occurred in front of the Bailor Darut Taqwa Hifz Madrasa in the Bailor Union area along the same highway. The victim, 38-year-old Shahidul, was attempting to cross the Dhaka-bound lane on foot when an unidentified speeding ambulance rammed into him from behind. The impact inflicted fatal injuries, killing him instantly. Shahidul, a day labourer by profession, was the son of the late Abbas Ali from Radhakanai village in neighbouring Fulbaria Upazila. He had been residing at his father-in-law Abdul Koddus’s home in the Sammukh Bailor area of Trishal for several years.
Following notification from local residents, law enforcement personnel from Trishal Police Station arrived at both accident sites to recover the bodies. Sub-Inspector Sabuj of Trishal Police Station confirmed the fatalities, stating that because no formal complaint was lodged by the family regarding Marjia Khatun’s death, her body was released to her relatives without an autopsy. Meanwhile, Shahidul’s body remains in police custody pending formal procedures, as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to identify and trace the hit-and-run bus and ambulance involved in the incidents.
