In a dramatic Dutch Eredivisie encounter, 31-year-old goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Junior accomplished precisely that, rescuing a 2-2 draw for his club Telstar against Cambuur.
The namesake of his famous father—the Dutch football legend and former national team manager Ronald Koeman—Koeman Junior appears to have inherited a knack for dead-ball situations. While the elder Koeman made a career out of scoring prolifically from defense, his son is now making headlines between the posts.
The match began disastrously for Telstar when Naaqi Thorisson received a straight red card in the 22nd minute, forcing the hosts to play with ten men for over an hour. Capitalising on the numerical advantage after the interval, Cambuur struck twice within seven minutes to take a commanding two-goal lead, placing Telstar on the brink of defeat.
The dramatic turnaround began just three minutes after Telstar conceded their second goal, when the home side was awarded a penalty. Showing immense composure, Koeman Junior ran the length of the pitch and converted cleanly from 12 yards out to halve the deficit. The drama peaked deep into stoppage time when Telstar earned a second penalty in the 11th minute of added time. Once again stepping up to the spot, the goalkeeper dispatched his second spot-kick of the afternoon, securing a sensational equalizer for his ten-man team.
Koeman Junior has developed a reputation for performing under pressure. On the final day of the previous season, he successfully converted an 89th-minute penalty against Volendam to secure a crucial 2-1 victory, which proved vital in ensuring Telstar’s retention of their top-flight status. All of his career goals have been scored for Telstar during the 2026 calendar year.
The feat inevitably draws comparisons to his father, who remains the highest-scoring defender in football history. During a decorated playing career spanning Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, and Feyenoord, the senior Koeman scored 254 goals across club and international football, including 115 penalties, despite missing 16 throughout his career. He subsequently pursued a high-profile managerial career, leading Southampton, Everton, Barcelona, and the Netherlands national team.
Born in Barcelona while his father was playing at the Camp Nou, Koeman Junior carved his own path in football as a goalkeeper. He began his senior professional career in the Netherlands with Almere City before joining TOP Oss. In the summer of 2021, he transferred to Telstar, eventually playing a pivotal role in the 2025 play-offs that helped the club secure promotion back to the Eredivisie after a 47-year absence. Following Sunday’s draw, Telstar sits 13th in the league table after four matches.
