Two Road Cleaners Killed In Highway Bus Collision

A fatal road traffic accident on the Dhaka-Mawa highway within the Keraniganj area of Dhaka has resulted in the deaths of two highway maintenance cleaners and left four others injured. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:00 pm in the Rajendrapur locality, situated directly on the key transport arterial route.

The emergency services were alerted immediately following the high-impact collision, prompting a rapid response from both local law enforcement and medical first responders. The event has raised fresh concerns among residents and transport workers regarding the safety of maintenance staff on major national dual carriageways.

Profile of the Victims and Casualties

The local police authorities have officially identified the deceased individuals as 35-year-old Mohammad Mahfuz and 36-year-old Jamal Hossain. Both men were employed as municipal road cleaners and were performing routine roadside duties at the time of the crash.

The collision also caused injuries to four of their professional colleagues who were working alongside them. The injured personnel have been identified as:

• Selim Hossain, aged 35

• Barkat Hossain, aged 32

• Jasim Uddin, aged 35

Medical staff at the receiving hospital have stated that the clinical condition of at least two of the injured workers remains highly critical.

Details of the Highway Crash

According to eyewitness accounts gathered from local sources, a team of dedicated road cleaners had gathered alongside their specialized service vehicle near the entrance of the Dhaka Central Jail. The team was positioned safely on the shoulder of the highway, preparing for their cleaning shift.

Without warning, a passenger coach operated by the commercial transport firm Golden Line Paribahan, which was travelling at high speed from Mawa towards the capital city of Dhaka, lost steering control. The heavy passenger vehicle veered off its path and struck the stationary maintenance vehicle violently from behind.

The sheer force of the rear-end impact propelled the maintenance vehicle approximately 50 feet along the asphalt, causing the chassis to crumple completely. Several passengers who were on board the offending bus at the time of the incident later alleged that the coach captain was actively operating a mobile telephone whilst driving. The passengers asserted that this severe distraction, combined with reckless speeding, directly caused the catastrophic loss of vehicle control.

Emergency Response and Legal Proceedings

Following the collision, local residents and bystanders rushed to the scene to assist the trapped and injured workers before the arrival of official emergency services. Personnel from the local police department arrived shortly thereafter to coordinate the rescue operation and manage the extensive traffic congestion that quickly built up along the Dhaka-bound lanes of the highway.

The injured victims were swiftly transported to the Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital for urgent medical intervention. Upon their arrival at the medical facility, the attending doctors on duty examined the casualties and pronounced Mahfuz and Jamal dead due to the severity of their internal injuries.

Mamun Or Rashid, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Hasara Highway Police Station, confirmed that the driver of the passenger bus abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot immediately after the accident to evade arrest. Law enforcement officers have successfully seized the Golden Line Paribahan coach, moving it into state custody to serve as material evidence.

The bodies of the two deceased cleaners have been transferred to the hospital morgue for mandatory post-mortem examinations. Officer-in-Charge Rashid further noted that a formal criminal case has been registered at the South Keraniganj Police Station, and an active police search operation is underway to locate and detain the absconding driver.
