In a development that has caused significant distress within the international sporting community, two members of the Sri Lanka Under-19 national cricket team have been arrested in Colombo following allegations of serious misconduct. The young athletes are accused of clandestinely recording female guests whilst they were using the bathrooms at a hotel in the capital. Following their arrest by the Narahenpita Police, the suspects were produced before a magistrate, where they were subsequently granted bail.
The incident was first brought to public attention through reports by major sporting outlets, including ESPNcricinfo. According to the preliminary investigation, the breach of privacy occurred earlier this week at a hotel located in the Narahenpita district of Colombo. Female guests at the establishment reported that mobile phones were being used to surreptitiously record them during private moments in the hotel’s lavatories.
Upon receiving the formal complaints from the victims, officers from the Narahenpita Police Station conducted a swift enquiry, which led to the identification and apprehension of the two cricketers. The police have confiscated the mobile devices allegedly used in the commission of the offence.
The authorities are currently conducting a forensic examination of the hardware to determine the extent of the recordings. A critical component of the ongoing investigation is to ascertain whether any of the captured footage has been uploaded to pornographic websites, distributed via encrypted messaging applications, or shared on social media platforms. Under Sri Lankan law, the distribution of such material constitutes a severe criminal offence with stringent penalties.
The suspects were presented before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court. During the initial hearing, the presiding magistrate granted bail to the two cricketers, set at a sum of 500,000 Sri Lankan Rupees each. While the court allowed their release pending further investigation, they are required to comply with judicial directives. The court has scheduled the next formal hearing for 25 May 2026. It remains unclear at this stage whether the court has imposed a travel ban or required the surrender of their passports to prevent them from leaving the jurisdiction before the conclusion of the legal process.
As of the time of reporting, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the national governing body for the sport, has maintained an official silence regarding the incident. No formal statement has been issued to address the moral or disciplinary implications of the arrests involving members of their age-group squad.
The timing of this scandal is particularly problematic for the organisation, which is currently embroiled in a period of unprecedented administrative instability. The Sri Lankan government recently intervened in the management of the board, dismissing the elected committee led by Shammi Silva. In its stead, a ‘Transformation Committee’ has been established to oversee the restructuring of the sport in the country.
This leadership vacuum and the lack of a permanent governing structure have raised concerns regarding the discipline and supervision of youth players. Analysts suggest that the ethical lapse of the Under-19 representatives further complicates the efforts of the interim administration to restore the reputation of Sri Lankan cricket on the global stage.
The Under-19 squad is traditionally viewed as the primary pipeline for the senior national team, and members are expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct as ambassadors of the nation. The allegations of voyeurism and the subsequent police intervention have cast a shadow over the youth development programme.
If the allegations are proven in court, the players face not only legal consequences but also the likelihood of lifetime bans from all forms of competitive cricket. For now, the Narahenpita Police continue to gather evidence and statements from the complainants, while the cricketing world awaits a definitive response from the newly formed Transformation Committee regarding the disciplinary measures to be taken against the accused.
