DHAKA — In a major crackdown on financial crime, officers from Gulshan Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have apprehended two young men and seized fake bank notes totaling BDT 2.8 million during a targeted operation in the capital’s upscale Gulshan area.
The law enforcement action was officially confirmed on Sunday afternoon by Niaz Mehedi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division. The two arrested individuals were identified as Al-Amin, 27, and Md. Sohan Hossain, 26. According to preliminary details released by the police, both suspects were directly involved in storing and attempting to circulate high-denomination counterfeit notes into local commercial channels.
Providing details of the drive, Gulshan Police Station sources revealed that operational units received specific intelligence regarding illicit currency movement in Gulshan-1. The tip-off indicated that several individuals carrying a massive stash of fake currency notes had assembled in front of a residential building in the area to execute a commercial transaction.
A specialized tactical squad from Gulshan Police Station immediately mobilized and cordoned off the designated location. Upon raiding the spot, officers successfully intercepted and detained Al-Amin and Sohan Hossain before they could attempt an escape. A thorough physical search led directly to the recovery of neatly bundled fake banknotes with a total face value of BDT 2,800,000.
Law enforcement authorities emphasized that fake currency rings frequently attempt to exploit high-volume commercial districts like Gulshan, particularly during peak trading periods. Officers are currently conducting interrogations to determine the origin of the forged bills, identify the printing syndicate behind the operation, and trace other co-conspirators involved in the wider distribution network. Legal procedures to file formal charges against the two detained suspects are currently underway at Gulshan Police Station.
