Unreleased Songs of Pagol Hasan

An initiative has been launched to preserve, catalogue and release the unreleased musical works of the late Baul singer Pagol Hasan, marking the second anniversary of his death. The project seeks to safeguard his artistic legacy while introducing his lesser-known compositions to both existing admirers and newer audiences.

The commemorative programme, titled “Smritite Pagol Hasan”, will be held at the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (World Literature Centre) in Dhaka. It is expected to bring together musicians, composers, producers, cultural activists and fans who were influenced by his work. In parallel, a memorial prayer has been arranged in his ancestral village in Chhatak, Sunamganj, reflecting the emotional connection his rural roots continue to hold for followers.

Pagol Hasan, a widely respected figure in contemporary Baul and folk music circles, died in a tragic road accident on 18 April 2024 near the Surma Bridge area in Chhatak. He was 33 years old at the time of his death. His sudden passing triggered widespread mourning across Bangladesh’s cultural community. He was particularly known for his expressive lyrical style and spiritually infused compositions, which resonated strongly with younger audiences.

Among his notable songs is “Asmaney Jaiyo Na Re Bondhu”, which played a key role in establishing his popularity. Following his death, several of his recordings were released posthumously, sustaining interest in his musical archive.

Musician Jewel Morshed, one of the organisers of the initiative, stated that the project has been developed by Hasan’s close associates with the intention of preserving and extending his creative legacy. According to organisers, approximately 20 unreleased songs have already been identified, with the possibility that additional recordings may be discovered in the future.

One unreleased track is scheduled for official release during the commemorative event. The broader plan involves gradually publishing his archived works through his official YouTube channel, ensuring structured and sustained access to his music. Younger music directors have also been invited to reinterpret selected compositions to connect his work with contemporary audiences.

Selected Posthumous Releases

Organisers have also confirmed that revenue generated from YouTube streaming and related performances will be reinvested into future releases and may contribute to supporting his family.

Coordination for the initiative is being managed through a WhatsApp group comprising his friends and collaborators, with noted musicians including Asif Akbar and Dhruva Guha acting as advisors.

In addition to the Dhaka programme, a larger commemorative festival is being planned for 2 June to further celebrate his life and musical contributions. A separate memorial event is also scheduled at the Sunamganj District Shilpakala Academy, highlighting continued regional engagement with his legacy.

Pagol Hasan, who married Lutfar Begum in 2011, is survived by his two sons. His body of work continues to be regarded as a meaningful contribution to contemporary Bangladeshi folk and mystic music traditions.
