Deep within the headquarters of Qinetic Network, in a dimly lit studio filled with the hum of high-end audio interfaces, Sanjoy is relentlessly at work. The Bangladeshi-American music producer and multi-instrumentalist has enjoyed a whirlwind period in his career, yet he shows no sign of slowing down. Having recently captivated a global audience at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Canada, Sanjoy has returned to Dhaka to perform a celebratory set commemorating the tournament’s final, solidifying his standing as a pioneering bridge between South Asian musical heritage and the global electronic dance music (EDM) stage.

During his world-stage performance in Canada, Sanjoy took the opportunity to showcase his cultural pride on an unprecedented scale. Taking to the stage to perform his hit track SIIR SIIR, he wore a bespoke maroon jacket featuring intricate embroidery of Bangladesh’s national symbols: the Royal Bengal Tiger and the water lily (shapla).

“It’s been one hell of a trip,” Sanjoy remarked, reflecting on the rapid sequence of events over a firm handshake. “Honestly, the entire thing is a bit of a blur to me. I just remember the sheer energy carrying me through the World Cup performance. And when I landed in Dhaka, the love that I received from the people—starting right from the flight itself—made me so grateful.”

When probed on which national side he was backing during the tournament, the producer adopted a unusually shy demeanour, preferring instead to focus on the future of football in his home country. “I don’t want to talk about who I supported, but I definitely want Bangladesh to be playing in the next World Cup. I believe that it is very possible if the tournament expands to 64 teams.” While such an expansion remains a ambitious concept to football realists, it aligns seamlessly with the unyielding optimism that has defined Sanjoy’s career trajectory.

Deep Roots in Classical Traditions and Electronic Soundscapes

Sanjoy’s unique sonic identity is largely attributed to his early upbringing. Raised in a musically inclined household, he was exposed to traditional Indian classical music before he could even speak. By the age of four, he had commenced formal training in both classical vocals and the tabla. This foundational grounding in intricate Eastern time signatures, complex rhythmic structures, and beat variations provided him with a distinct advantage over many Western-trained EDM producers when he eventually transitioned into modern music production.

Following his family’s relocation to California, Sanjoy began experimenting with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) during his early teenage years. His synthesis of traditional South Asian melodies with modern electronic synthesis quickly attracted attention within the Bangladeshi diaspora and beyond. By the age of 11, he was already performing live alongside touring Bangladeshi legends, including the acclaimed producer Fuad Almuqtadir.

“I remember being 11 and playing with various Bangladeshi artistes who toured the USA,” Sanjoy recalled. “Fuad-bhai will always be one of my biggest inspirations and mentors.”

Over the subsequent decade, Sanjoy expanded his repertoire through high-profile international collaborations, eventually achieving a historic milestone by cracking the US Top 40 charts—a feat previously deemed nearly impossible for an artiste of Bangladeshi heritage. His success broke significant ground for South Asian representation in the Western commercial music sector. “For me, it was about belief. I just wanted to be myself and make music, and the rest would follow,” he explained.

Modern Artistry, Artificial Intelligence, and Global Ambitions

In an era where the role of disc jockeys is frequently debated, Sanjoy firmly defends his craft, aligning himself with contemporary electronic icons who have redefined performance art.

“Throughout the years, people have redefined what it means to be a DJ,” he asserted. “Look at Martin Garrix or Marshmello—they are incredibly skilled musicians. I am a multi-instrumentalist and a DJ, and I am incredibly proud of being exactly that.”

Unlike many contemporary creative professionals who view the rise of artificial intelligence with trepidation, Sanjoy embraces technological innovation within the studio environment without fear of obsolescence. “Of course not,” he said with a smile when asked if AI poses a threat to his livelihood. “I love AI and use it to fast-track my work sometimes. But I know one thing for sure—AI can never replace me.”

Looking ahead, Sanjoy’s primary objective is to spearhead a global movement for Bangla music, drawing inspiration from the international mainstream integration of other regional genres such as Afrobeats and Latin pop. He envisions a future where Bangladeshi music commands equal reverence on mainstream radio and global festival stages.

“You just have to look at what musicians from other cultures are doing. Afrobeats artistes like Burna Boy are everywhere—and that’s where I want Bangla music to be. Everywhere. Bangladeshi musicians need to have the confidence and grit to take their music to places it has never been before.”

When asked about his ultimate trajectory, his response was delivered with unwavering conviction: “I want to be the biggest superstar in the world.” Given his track record of turning ambitious dreams into tangible milestones, few would doubt his ability to achieve precisely that.
