In a shocking incident reminiscent of a cinematic assault, a journalist was attacked at the Mirpur Intellectuals’ Memorial in Dhaka on Sunday, 14 December. Video footage of the episode rapidly circulated on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.

The footage depicts a young man rushing towards the journalist, forcibly gripping their arm, and spinning them around before attempting to flee the scene. Police, present at the memorial, swiftly intercepted the assailant, preventing his escape. As the situation escalated, bystanders reportedly attempted to physically confront the attacker. Law enforcement officers intervened to restrain the crowd and restore order.

Despite the widespread circulation of the video, detailed information regarding the identities of both the journalist and the assailant has yet to emerge. Authorities have not released statements specifying the motives behind the attack.

Earlier in the morning, the memorial had witnessed solemn ceremonies. President Md. Sahabuddin, along with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government, paid their respects to the martyred intellectuals. The president laid a wreath at the memorial at approximately 7:00 a.m., followed by the chief adviser at 7:20 a.m., in a formal ceremony that drew officials and members of the public alike.

Observers note the contrast between the dignified morning commemorations and the violent incident that followed, highlighting ongoing concerns about public safety and the protection of journalists in crowded public spaces. Investigations are reportedly underway to determine both the circumstances of the assault and the potential involvement of external actors.

The incident has reignited discussions about the vulnerability of media personnel during public events and the need for stronger preventive measures to ensure the safety of journalists while they perform their duties.
