It is often said that trust and faith are gradually slipping away from modern society. Yet, certain individuals prove through their dedication, integrity, and artistic journey that true commitment never fades; instead, it leaves an indelible mark on people’s hearts.

Today, we celebrate one such luminary: Aruna Biswas, a beloved face across Bangladeshi cinema, television, and theatre.

Born into an artistically rich environment, Aruna Biswas is the daughter of Bangladesh’s legendary theatre icon, Amalendu Biswas, and the renowned artist, Jyotsna Biswas. Far from merely inheriting her family’s formidable cultural legacy, she has nurtured and elevated it through her talent, hard work, and relentless devotion.

Born on 1 August 1967, Aruna completed her SSC in 1983 from the historic Bharateswari Homes in Tangail. She then earned her HSC from Badrunnesa Government Women’s College and graduated from Eden Mohila College. Later, she expanded her academic horizons by obtaining a diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from Oxford College in Canada.

Her acting journey began not on the silver screen, but on the stage as a member of the Bohubachon theatre troupe. She made her theatrical debut in Dhaka with the play Teen Poyshar Pala, directed by Kamal Uddin Nilu.

In 1984, she captured the television audience’s attention opposite Afzal Hossain in the drama Ekhane Jibon, directed by Noresh Bhuiyan. Shortly after, in 1986, she made her silver screen debut in Chapadangar Bou, directed by the legendary actor Nayakraj Razzak. Her performance in that film remains a cherished topic among Bangladeshi cinephiles to this day.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, she has appeared in over a hundred films. Teaming up with leading actors such as Bapparaj, Ilias Kanchan, Omar Sani, Aliraj, and Manna, she delivered numerous memorable performances. Beyond acting, her accomplishments in dance and music have further enriched her artistic portfolio.

Aruna Biswas has never limited herself strictly to acting. She has played significant roles in producing and directing television dramas and films, as well as contributing actively to cultural organisations. Her short film Thikana 32, based on the life of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, earned widespread critical acclaim. Furthermore, her government-funded feature film Impossible (Oshomobhov) underscored her creative prowess as a filmmaker.

Her contributions to the industry include serving as a member of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board. In recognition of her outstanding service to arts and culture, she was honoured with the prestigious Shilpakala Padak in 2022.
