The recently released K-drama ‘As You Stood By’ has taken the global audience by storm. According to Netflix, the series reached number eight on the platform’s list of most-streamed foreign-language shows within its first week of release. It has already secured a spot in the top 10 charts across 22 countries, signalling its widespread popularity. The eight-episode thriller centres on a tale of vengeance involving two women, combining suspense with social commentary.
Directed by Lee Jeong-rim, the series stars Yun-su (Jeon So-nee) and Hui-su (Lee Yu-mi). Hui-su suffers years of abuse at the hands of her husband No Jang-pyo (Jang Seung-jo). In a desperate bid for justice, she plots his murder with her friend Yun-su. The narrative builds around whether their plan will ultimately succeed, exploring the psychological and moral dilemmas they face.
Actress Lee Yu-mi expressed her excitement over the series’ success, telling the South China Morning Post, “Beneath its thriller exterior, this series is fundamentally about women’s empowerment. That powerful theme is why I chose to be involved. I was nervous before the release, but the audience response has been overwhelming.”
She also discussed her preparation for the role, revealing that she had to manage both mental and physical strain. “On set, I tried to keep myself grounded. When the pressure became too intense, I took breaks to recuperate. Physically, I reduced my weight from 41kg to 37kg to portray the character’s extreme distress faithfully,” she said.
Lee Jeong-rim, the director, is also a woman. She noted that in most films and series, female characters tend to be “monotonous or unrealistic”. With As You Stood By, she aimed to craft characters that audiences could genuinely empathise with. Although the director has not officially confirmed it, South Korean media reports suggest that a second season is already in the works.
