A heart-wrenching accident claimed the life of a young student in Satkania, Chattogram, early on Wednesday morning, 25 February, leaving his family and community in profound grief. Khorshed Rabbi, aged 25, was struck by a speeding truck while travelling with friends to the seaside resort town of Cox’s Bazar. His family originates from the Nilampotti neighbourhood in Nalitabari, Sherpur.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, the tragic incident occurred at approximately 8:00 AM along the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway. Khorshed Rabbi, a fourth-year Honours student in the Department of Political Science at Anandamohan College, was the son of Fazlur Rahman, a primary school teacher in his hometown.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Rabbi and four friends had departed on Tuesday night in a microbus bound for Cox’s Bazar. During the early hours of Wednesday, the group stopped at the roadside in Satkania to rest. Rabbi had stepped out of the vehicle to cross to the other side when a truck, approaching from behind at speed, struck him. He was pronounced dead instantly at the scene.
News of the accident spread rapidly in Nalitabari, casting a pall of sorrow over the community. Family, classmates, and neighbours expressed deep grief and remembered Rabbi for his dedication to social causes. He was an active voluntary blood donor and frequently contributed to community welfare initiatives.
Khorshed Rabbi’s elder brother, Ujjal, spoke emotionally: “He was our beloved younger brother. He recently married and was blessed with a daughter. Last night he set off for Cox’s Bazar, and this morning we received the news of his death. It is an immense sorrow for our family. His body is currently at Satkania Police Station, and arrangements for its handover are underway.”
Satkania Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Ashrafuzzaman, confirmed the fatality: “The death has been verified. The official report, specifying the exact circumstances and location, is still pending. Appropriate action will follow once the report is completed.”
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of highways, particularly for students and travellers stopping near the roadside during early hours. Authorities have urged all road users to exercise caution and vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
