Dhaka: Ali Hossain Fakir has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), succeeding Baharul Alam. Fakir, previously serving as Additional Inspector General of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), received a promotion to the top police post in Bangladesh.
The appointment was officially announced on Tuesday through a notification issued by the Police-1 Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The notification was signed by Deputy Secretary Tousif Ahmed on behalf of the President of Bangladesh. According to the notice, the order will take immediate effect in the public interest.
Ali Hossain Fakir is a member of the 15th Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre and hails from Bagerhat district. He assumes the IGP role ahead of the completion of Baharul Alam’s contract, who was appointed on 20 November 2024 by the caretaker government for a two-year term. Alam still had approximately nine months remaining in his tenure when Fakir’s appointment was made.
Police headquarters sources highlighted Fakir’s extensive experience across various policing capacities. He has previously served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at the Police Headquarters and the Special Protection Battalion (SPBn). He has also held the positions of Superintendent of Police (SP) in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura districts, as well as Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Fakir commanded the Rang Reserve Force (RRF) in Sylhet and led multiple APBn units, including Khulna-3, Dhaka-5, and Sylhet-7. Internationally, he has represented Bangladesh Police in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast.
Born on 5 April 1968 in Sadar Thana, Bagerhat, Fakir holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and MBA degrees from the University of Dhaka’s Department of Management. He joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1995 under the 15th BCS (Police) cadre. Currently, he serves as the Acting President of the Police Service Association.
Ali Hossain Fakir is married to Professor Nasima Ferdousi, who is the Head of the Finance Department at Government Titumir College. The couple has one son and one daughter.
