Police Seek Return to Traditional Uniforms

Concerns have resurfaced among field-level police personnel regarding the recently introduced uniform, with many officers expressing discomfort and dissatisfaction. Numerous members of the force have openly questioned the colour and design of the new attire, calling for a reconsideration of the change and a return to the traditional uniform. The matter has also drawn public attention on social media, where the new uniform has been subject to ridicule, further heightening the unease among officers.

On Monday night, the Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) issued a statement signed by its General Secretary and Comilla District Police Superintendent, Md. Anisuzzaman. The statement conveyed deep concern over the hasty decision to introduce the new uniform, emphasising that the majority of the force does not support the change. Officers reportedly feel that the current attire does not represent the longstanding traditions, discipline, or professionalism of the Bangladesh Police.

The BPSA statement further criticised the former caretaker government for selecting the uniform without consultation, ignoring the climate, skin tones of officers, and their professional input. It highlighted that the new uniform bears a striking resemblance to those worn by other services, making it more difficult to identify police personnel at a glance.

Historically, the khaki uniform worn by the Bangladesh Police was carefully selected in 2003–04 by a specially formed committee. It was designed to be practical for varying weather conditions, identifiable during both day and night duties, and distinct from other security services.

The association also raised concerns over the financial burden of producing new uniforms, describing the process as costly and potentially straining the national economy. They suggested that funds would be better spent on modernising the force, improving logistics, and supplying vehicles to police stations rather than altering uniform colour or design.

According to Md. Anisuzzaman, “Field officers’ opinions were overlooked when introducing this uniform. It is unsuitable, and while other services have periodically updated their attire, only police uniforms have been changed without proper consultation. We urge the Ministry of Home Affairs to reconsider this decision. A return to our previous uniform is feasible and would restore confidence among officers.”

They emphasise that morale, professionalism, and operational efficiency should take precedence over cosmetic changes in attire.
