A young man has been fatally stabbed in Dhaka's Shantibagh area following a dispute over alleged interference with drug consumption. The victim, Sekandar Ali, 32, succumbed to his injuries on Monday night, 9 March, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The assault occurred earlier that evening in 17 Number Bhangari Lane, Shantibagh, leaving the community in shock. Witnesses reported seeing multiple assailants fleeing the scene immediately after the attack.
Sekandar’s brother, Amir Ali, alleged that the attackers are known local drug dealers. “Sekandar confronted them for consuming and distributing drugs in the neighbourhood. In retaliation, Mamun, Hannan, and several others joined forces to attack him with sharp weapons,” he told reporters.
Shahjahanpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Amirul Islam confirmed that law enforcement has so far identified three to four primary suspects involved in the stabbing. “We are actively pursuing their arrests,” he said. The police added that the family is in the process of filing a case against six to seven individuals connected to the incident.
At the hospital, Inspector Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, described the victim’s injuries in detail. “The deceased sustained multiple lacerations from sharp weapons, including severe wounds to the head and other parts of the body,” he said.
The violent incident has raised concerns among local residents about drug-related crime in Shantibagh. Many community members have expressed frustration over the lack of effective policing in the area, calling for stricter measures to curb illicit activities.
The authorities are now working on a detailed investigation, including reviewing local CCTV footage and gathering witness statements to identify all involved parties. Police have also urged residents to cooperate by providing any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
