174 Bangladeshi Migrants Repatriated From Libyan Detention

A group of 174 Bangladeshi nationals arrived safely in Dhaka on Monday, 1 June 2026, following their release from the Tadjoura Detention Centre in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. The successful repatriation was achieved through the continuous diplomatic initiatives of the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, working in close coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Arrival Logistics and Health Screening

The repatriated citizens arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the early hours of Monday morning aboard a commercial flight operated by Buraq Air. According to institutional records, 14 individuals within the arriving cohort required immediate attention due to varying degrees of physical illness and health complications sustained during their confinement.

The return was formally announced on Sunday evening via an official statement published on the digital channels of the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya. Prior to their departure, the Bangladeshi Ambassador to Libya met with the migrants to review their cases and verify their identities.

Accounts of Exploitation and Abuse

During their discussions with state officials, the returnees provided detailed accounts of their experiences at the hands of illicit human trafficking networks. Enticed by fraudulent promises made by local and international brokers offering undocumented maritime transit into Europe across the Mediterranean Sea, the individuals instead found themselves held hostage by criminal syndicates within Libya.

Many of the returnees bore physical marks of violence, confirming they were subjected to torture and extortion as traffickers attempted to extract ransoms from their families in Bangladesh. To meet these financial demands, numerous households were forced to liquidate ancestral lands and property, leaving them economically destitute.

Furthermore, the migrants described the severe humanitarian deficits endured inside the Tadjoura facility, citing restricted access to nutritional food, potable water, and essential healthcare services. Following these hardships, the returnees collectively pledged never to attempt unauthorized or dangerous migration routes in the future.

Summary of Repatriation Operations and Support

Parameter Operational Details
Total Repatriated Citizens 174 Individuals
Origin Facility Tadjoura Detention Centre, Tripoli, Libya
Transport Provider Buraq Air (Chartered/Scheduled Flight)
Medical Status 14 individuals flagged with physical illnesses
Primary Institutional Agencies MoFA, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare, Bangladesh Embassy, IOM
Post-Arrival Aid Provided Travel allowances, food packets, basic clinical care, temporary shelter

Diplomatic Directives and Awareness Campaigns

The Bangladeshi Ambassador listened to the testimonies and urged the returnees to actively share the realities of their journeys within their home communities. He emphasized that by recounting the details of their confinement, the financial losses, and the physical abuse, they would help deter other vulnerable individuals from embarking on dangerous journeys arranged by illicit middlemen.

The Ambassador underlined that irregular migration causes severe financial and psychological harm to families while generating long-term negative socio-economic consequences at the national level. He advised aspiring migrants to rely strictly on state-approved recruitment agencies, cross-verify all employment documentation before departure, and avoid unlicensed brokers.

Broader Scope of National Repatriation Initiatives

The arrival of this group forms part of a wider, ongoing repatriation framework managed by the government. Within the current calendar month, the Bangladesh Embassy, in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, is executing a plan to return a total of 514 undocumented nationals from both the Ganfouda and Tadjoura detention facilities via four structured flights.

Government officials and returning migrants emphasized that to curb the flow of illegal migration effectively, the state must introduce stricter regulatory checks on transit routes involving specific transit hubs, such as checking airport contracts and managing the misuse of Umrah visas.
