The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised Senegal for its efforts to improve transparency regarding its national debt and indicated its readiness to assist the West African nation with a new aid programme.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva highlighted that Senegal had made “important progress” in addressing the previous misrepresentation of its budget deficits, commending the authorities for their commitment to transparency.
“We welcome the actions taken to identify public debt liabilities and the close collaboration of Senegalese officials with Fund staff on these issues,” Georgieva said in a statement on Friday.
Senegal, which carries a heavy debt burden, faced a suspension of its $1.8 billion IMF credit line last year after reports surfaced of distorted figures and fiscal mismanagement.
Senegal has officially requested a new IMF-supported programme, which Georgieva welcomed: “Senegal is in a good position to move expeditiously forward on all fronts.”
Formal negotiations for the new programme are expected to commence in mid-October 2025, coinciding with the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings.
