Storm Amy Claims Life in Ireland, Disrupts UK

A violent storm, named Amy, wreaked havoc across Britain and Ireland on Friday, bringing high winds, flooding, power outages, cancelled flights, and school closures.

In Ireland, police reported that a man in his 40s suffered fatal injuries in a weather-related incident at a domestic residence in County Donegal.

“A man, aged in his 40s, was fatally injured in the incident at a domestic residence,” said a police statement, without providing further details.

 

Ireland’s meteorological service Met Éireann recorded wind gusts of up to 148 kilometres per hour (92 mph), with the most severe conditions along the western coast.

In Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office confirmed a provisional wind speed record of 148 kilometres per hour.

Impact on Utilities and Transport

  • Power Outages:
    • In Ireland, around 184,000 homes, farms, and businesses were left without electricity, according to ESB, the national electricity operator.
    • In Northern Ireland, 50,000 properties were without power.
  • Rail Disruption:
    • Uprooted trees on the Dublin-Belfast train line forced a full suspension for the day.
    • Other routes experienced delays or cancellations due to fallen trees and downed power lines.
  • Air Travel:
    • Dublin Airport cancelled 58 outbound flights.
    • Nine inbound flights were diverted to alternative airports.
  • Schools:
    • Schools across much of the UK were advised to close early as high winds disrupted normal operations.
