Sub-Inspector Moniruzzaman from Gaibandha has drawn attention within the police department after his wife filed a case against the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Officer-in-Charge (OC). Reportedly, his wife, Kajoli Khatun, lodged the case with the Gaibandha District Magistrate Court on October 22 to save her husband from departmental punishment. Following the filing, the Police Headquarters launched an investigation into the matter.
According to Assistant Inspector General (Media & Planning) AHM Shahadat Hossain, “The police have a chain of command which SI Moniruzzaman completely ignored. Instead, he attempted to shift the blame onto his superiors to protect himself. The Police Headquarters is currently investigating the matter.”
Investigation sources said that on March 25 this year, a man named Tariquzzaman Tuhin from Burimari village in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, filed a complaint with the Gaibandha Superintendent of Police. The complaint alleged that SI Moniruzzaman of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station created a fake Facebook page titled ‘Bangla Khobor 1971’ and spread defamatory posts about him. Patgram police initially detained Tuhin but later released him after realizing the mistake.
Subsequently, SP Nishat Angela summoned SI Moniruzzaman through OC Shahinur Islam. During interrogation, his statements appeared inconsistent, leading police to seize his mobile phone and Lenovo laptop, which were later sent to the CID Headquarters in Dhaka for forensic examination. Later, Moniruzzaman was transferred from Gaibandha to the Rajshahi Range and subsequently to Joypurhat district.
Months later, on October 22, Moniruzzaman’s wife filed a case at the Gaibandha Sadar Magistrate Court, alleging unlawful seizure of the devices. The SP, OC, and the complainant Tariquzzaman were named as accused. The court assigned the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to probe the case.
A senior police official at headquarters stated that Moniruzzaman allegedly used the fake page to post false information targeting individuals and then extorted money to delete the posts. “To divert attention from the ongoing inquiry, he made his wife file this case,” the official said.
Gaibandha Sadar OC Shahinur Islam commented, “His phone and laptop were not unlawfully seized. They were taken in his presence, properly recorded in a GD, and sent to the CID for forensic analysis. He is likely using this strategy to avoid disciplinary action.”
Superintendent of Police Nishat Angela said, “As the matter is now being handled by Police Headquarters, I have no personal remarks on it.”
