Unprecedented Football Scandal: Bolivian Clash Ends with 17 Shock Red Cards!

Bolivian football has witnessed many dramatic moments over the years, but the shocking events that unfolded during the Copa Bolivia quarter-final second leg between Real Oruro and Blooming may be among the most extraordinary. What began as a competitive fixture at Jesús Bermúdez Stadium ended as a law-and-order crisis as players, coaches and staff engaged in a violent confrontation, prompting police to intervene with tear gas. In total, a staggering seventeen red cards were issued.

The second leg of the tie had significant importance. Blooming, having secured a 2–1 victory in the first leg, required only a draw to reach the semi-finals. Although Real Oruro fought tenaciously, the match ended 2–2—sending Blooming through on aggregate. But the real drama began moments after the referee blew the final whistle.

Reports from El Potosí revealed that Real Oruro players and staff initiated the altercation, visibly angered by their elimination from the tournament. Video footage shows emotions boiling over instantly. The hostility escalated rapidly as players charged towards one another, shouting, pushing and eventually punching.

Real Oruro footballer Sebastián Ceballos is seen in recordings being restrained by Blooming players as he attempted to continue attacking opposing staff members. Fellow player Julio Villa delivered a forceful punch on a Blooming player, striking him directly in the face. Meanwhile, head coach Marcelo Robledo became embroiled in a heated scuffle with an official linked to Bolivia’s national team.

At first, the cause of the confrontation seemed unclear. But according to El Potosí, Real Oruro players reacted aggressively because they “could not accept the outcome of the second leg”, losing temper and discipline in the process.

The intensity of the clash quickly spiralled beyond control. Police, already stationed near the pitch, rushed onto the field—twenty officers in total—in an effort to restore order. Their attempts proved futile at first, forcing them to use tear gas shells, a drastic measure rarely witnessed in professional football. Players and coaching staff scattered as the gas spread, while spectators covered their faces and retreated from the stands.

British media outlet Mirror reported that referee Renan Castillo issued red cards to seven Blooming players, four Real Oruro players and six staff members from both teams. The official document confirms the unprecedented total of seventeen dismissals, undoubtedly one of the highest in a single match in modern football.

The consequences will be felt well beyond the night’s conflict. Blooming now face the semi-finals without at least six suspended players, significantly weakening their line-up. Moreover, the referee has filed a supplementary report with Bolivia’s Sports Disciplinary Tribunal, meaning further suspensions, fines or bans could still follow.

Real Oruro head coach Marcelo Robledo was also injured during the altercation. According to Bolivian outlet Vision360, he suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to hospital shortly after the incident.

Bolivian football authorities have already announced a formal investigation. Many analysts believe harsh sanctions are inevitable, arguing that such violent behaviour not only damages the integrity of the sport but also sets a dangerous precedent in the country’s football environment.

Spectators and commentators alike have expressed shock and disappointment. What should have been a celebration of competitive football turned instead into a shameful display of aggression. The night’s events will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the darkest chapters in Bolivian football.
