Usman Khawaja has successfully passed a fitness assessment ahead of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, signalling his return to full readiness for Australia. The left-handed opener, who was hampered by back spasms during the Perth Test, impressed the team physiotherapist Nick Jones with his agility, endurance, and strength.
During an optional training session on Monday afternoon, Khawaja was put through a 25-minute series of shuttle runs, sidesteps, and squats designed to gauge his physical condition after his recent injury. At one point, he offered a thumbs up to Jones, reflecting his determination and confidence in overcoming the setback.
Following the fitness drills, Khawaja moved to the nets for his first batting practice since Perth. Assisted by Michael Di Venuto, he faced throwdowns that allowed him to refine his technique and timing, essential for a player of his calibre in a high-stakes Test match.
Pat Cummins also took to the nets, demonstrating his rhythm and pace as he continues his recovery from a back problem. The fast bowler produced a delivery of exceptional speed and late movement that left Marnus Labuschagne completely beaten, highlighting Cummins’ return to form.
Khawaja’s successful assessment is a major relief for the Australian side, which has been carefully monitoring the fitness of key players ahead of the Gabba clash. With both Khawaja and Cummins looking sharp, Australia enters the second Test with renewed confidence, aiming to capitalise on their home advantage and challenge England for early supremacy in the Ashes series.
