Bangladesh Under-21’s junior hockey squad battled back from a three-goal deficit to draw 3-3 against South Korea, thanks to the sensational Amirul Islam, who completed his second consecutive hat-trick of the Junior World Cup.
The game began ominously for Bangladesh at Chennai’s Radhakrishnan Stadium. Korea quickly established dominance, with Lee Min Hyeok scoring from a penalty corner in the 8th minute, followed by Son Siyonghan’s 13th-minute strike. Lee Min Hyeok added a third goal via penalty stroke in the 17th minute, leaving the Bangladesh defence reeling and morale dipping.
In the third quarter, Amirul’s brilliance came to the fore. He netted the first goal in the 38th minute, signalling Bangladesh’s resurgence. His second goal arrived early in the fourth quarter, and the finishing touch of his hat-trick came in the 56th minute. Every goal was a clinical conversion from a penalty corner, underlining his mastery and composure under pressure.
Analysts have praised Amirul’s drag-flicking precision, describing him as the backbone of the Bangladesh squad. His performance has not only contributed directly to the scoreboard but also inspired his teammates to fight back against a technically superior Korea side.
Having lost 5-3 to world champions Australia in the tournament opener, Bangladesh’s consecutive strong performances highlight their growth and resilience. Amirul’s six goals across two games position him as one of the tournament’s standout players. The final group-stage clash against France offers Bangladesh a chance to maintain momentum and strengthen their chances of progressing.
Amirul’s back-to-back hat-tricks reinforce the notion that individual brilliance can dramatically alter the course of a match, making him a player to watch throughout the competition.
