Lionel Messi scored for the first time since the death of his father, but his goal was not enough to earn Inter Miami a victory as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer.
The match, played in the early hours of Thursday Bangladesh time, saw Miami recover from an early setback before surrendering their lead in the second half. Daniel Pintor also scored for Miami, while Indiana Vassilev and Noel Pierre were on target for Philadelphia.
Philadelphia made the stronger start and took the lead in the 11th minute. Indiana Vassilev finished from Francis Westfield’s assist to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. Miami responded quickly, however, and restored parity just 10 minutes later.
Pintor converted a pass from Luis Suarez to bring Miami level. The visitors then completed the turnaround only five minutes later, with Messi producing the moment of individual brilliance that put his side in front.
Yannick Frey found Messi on the right side of the penalty area. The Miami captain used his left foot superbly to evade three Philadelphia defenders before curling a precise effort beyond the goalkeeper. It was Messi’s 13th goal of the MLS season.
The goal also carried personal significance for the Argentina captain, coming after the death of his father. It marked Messi’s first goal since the bereavement.
Miami continued to look for a third goal after taking the lead, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Philadelphia, meanwhile, increased the pressure as they searched for an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 58th minute.
Noel Pierre rose to head the ball into the net and levelled the contest at 2-2. Philadelphia appeared to complete another comeback only three minutes later, but the goal was ruled out because Pierre had been offside during the build-up.
The home side continued to threaten. A particularly promising opportunity came after a clever pass from Kavan Sullivan released a Philadelphia attacker with only the goalkeeper to beat, but the chance was not converted. Sullivan later tried to create an opening himself, without success.
The closing stages were overshadowed by a confrontation involving the Sullivan brothers. Shortly before the final whistle, Quinn Sullivan was fouled inside the penalty area, after which an argument broke out between him and a Miami player.
Kavan Sullivan intervened in an attempt to protect his brother, and the incident escalated into a physical confrontation. Once order was restored, the referee showed red cards to Kavan Sullivan and Miami’s Yannick Bright. Quinn Sullivan was booked with a yellow card.
The incident made for a particularly difficult ending for the two brothers, who are of Bangladeshi heritage.
The draw also cost Miami ground in the race near the top of the standings. They now have 39 points from 20 matches, having recorded 11 wins and six draws. Nashville, who have played the same number of matches, remain top with 46 points.
For Messi, the evening brought a notable personal milestone, but for Miami it was another missed opportunity to close the gap at the summit. Despite recovering from an early deficit and taking the lead through their captain, they could not hold on for all three points.
