Enzo Fernández’s rise in international football has been remarkable. Within his debut season for Argentina, the midfielder helped the nation secure the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a feat many players spend their entire careers chasing. His outstanding performances earned him the accolade of Best Young Player of the tournament, showcasing his talent on the world stage.
In addition to his World Cup success, Fernández was a key figure in Argentina’s 2024 Copa América victory, further establishing his importance to the national side. Yet, despite these major accomplishments, Fernández admits that his personal ambitions remain unfulfilled. Chief among them is the dream of captaining Argentina.
In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Fernández explained, “Personally, I absolutely dream of captaining Argentina. But that decision is not mine. It’s in the hands of the coaching staff. If I ever have the chance to wear the captain’s armband, it would be a tremendous honour and a career highlight.”
Currently, Lionel Messi remains the team’s captain, having led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022. Messi’s eventual retirement from international football, expected around the 2026 World Cup, could create the perfect opportunity for Fernández to step into a leadership role.
Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Fernández emphasised the inspiration of playing alongside Messi. “Winning the World Cup with Lionel was an unbelievable experience. We grew up watching him and understood that his only remaining ambition was the World Cup. Being able to share that moment with him was incredible. We were determined to win it for him,” he said.
Looking ahead, Fernández is aware of the challenges of retaining the World Cup in 2026. “Italy and Brazil have achieved consecutive wins, but it’s rare. We are focused on the present and our preparation. If it is Messi’s last tournament, we will do everything to defend our title,” he added.
Enzo Fernández’s journey is emblematic of a player not content with personal glory alone. With World Cup and continental trophies already secured, his ambition for leadership signals the next phase of his international career—a journey that could see him one day captaining the nation he already inspires.
