Day three of the Christchurch Test belonged entirely to New Zealand. From a modest lead of 96 at the start, the Black Caps ended the day 481 runs ahead of the West Indies, with a colossal 279-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra (176) and Tom Latham (145) underpinning their dominance.
The pitch offered ideal batting conditions after two bowler-friendly days, and the Kiwi pair seized the opportunity with precision and aggression. Latham’s calm century complemented Ravindra’s fiery innings, which included 27 boundaries and a six, leaving West Indies’ bowlers exhausted and demoralised.
Early chances went begging for the visitors, as Ravindra survived at 8 and 13 before taking command. Layne was repeatedly punished, conceding 80 runs in a taxing spell, while Roach’s occasional bursts were not enough to stem the tide. By Tea, the Black Caps were already asserting control, and the post-Tea session saw the pair accelerate, crossing 300 in the first over.
Eventually, late breakthroughs from Roach and Shields accounted for Latham and Ravindra, but the damage was done. New Zealand had posted 417/4 in the second innings, leaving West Indies staring at a Herculean task. With two days still to play, the hosts are in complete control and look poised to convert their dominance into victory.
Brief scores: New Zealand 231 & 417/4 (Rachin Ravindra 176, Tom Latham 145; Kemar Roach 2-61) lead West Indies 167 by 481 runs.
