Doctor Reveals Details in Child Sajid’s Final Prescription

In Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila, rescue efforts stretched over 32 tense hours as Fire Service personnel worked tirelessly to save young Sajid, who had fallen into a 50-foot pit. Although he was eventually pulled out unconscious on Thursday at around 9:00 pm, the medical team could not save him. Upon being taken to the hospital, duty doctors at the emergency department of the upazila health complex declared him dead at 9:50 pm.

Dr Barnabas Hasda stated that the child had died before reaching the hospital. According to him, extreme cold and lack of oxygen were the primary causes of death.

Sajid’s grandfather, Ayub Ali, expressed his disbelief and sorrow. He said, “He was alive when he was rescued. Fire Service officials were saying he was still breathing. I saw him alive with my own eyes. But after arriving at the hospital, he passed away. His body has now been taken to our home in Tanore’s Kurirhat Purbo Para.”

Earlier, Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, explained, “We rescued the boy at 9:00 pm in an unconscious state. After sending him to the hospital swiftly, we were informed that he had been declared dead. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.”

He further mentioned that this rescue was entirely different from extinguishing a fire or retrieving someone from water, and was significantly more hazardous. “The pipe was only 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Before Fire Service teams arrived, local residents, driven by emotion, attempted to carry out the rescue. Unfortunately, their efforts backfired, causing soil and debris to fall into the pipe. As a result, Sajid became trapped under the earth.”

It has been learned that the person responsible for digging the pit is named Kachir. Following the incident, he has allegedly gone into hiding, according to Sajid’s mother, Runa Khatun.

Heartbroken over her son’s death, Runa Khatun demanded justice, saying, “He dug three pits. For two years they have been left uncovered like this. Why were they abandoned? I want punishment for Kachir, I want justice. He came to see us once after the incident and then disappeared. He has fled.”

Sajid’s father, Rakibul Islam, has been devastated since the accident. He shifts between silence and loud cries of grief, unable to stand without support.

Tanore Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Shahinuzzaman, reported, “We have not been able to locate Kachir, the person who dug the pit. The investigation is ongoing.”
