A seriously injured elderly man, found abandoned by the roadside in Narsingdi’s Palash upazila, has died after being taken to hospital, while a microbus driver has been detained by local residents and later handed over to police.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning around 8am in the Bagdi area along the Pachdona–Ghorashal road. According to police and eyewitness accounts, locals became alarmed after noticing a microbus stopped by a relatively quiet stretch of road. The driver was allegedly attempting to leave behind a bloodied and critically injured elderly man on the roadside.
As the situation unfolded, residents intervened and apprehended the driver on the spot. Anger quickly escalated, and he was physically assaulted by the crowd before police were informed. Officers later arrived and took the driver into custody.
The injured man, whose identity has not yet been established, was immediately transported to Palash Upazila Health Complex. Medical staff, however, declared him dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
The detained driver has been identified as Monir Hossain, son of the late Jalil Hawlader, originally from Chirapara village in Banaripara upazila of Barishal. During preliminary questioning, he claimed that the elderly man had been handed over to him in a severely injured condition by several unidentified individuals near a petrol pump in the Gabtoli area. He stated that those individuals requested he transport the man to hospital.
According to his statement, he initially intended to take the victim for treatment. However, he later became apprehensive about potential police complications and chose instead to leave the man in a secluded area in Narsingdi.
Authorities have not yet verified this account, and investigations are ongoing to determine the sequence of events, the identity of the victim, and how the man sustained such critical injuries. Police say further details will be disclosed as inquiries progress.
Palash Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahed Al Mamun confirmed that the driver is currently being interrogated. He added that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear and are under active investigation.
