The heavyweights of Bangladeshi football, Bashundhara Kings and Mohammedan Sporting Club, played out a tense goalless draw in their Federation Cup encounter at the Language Martyr Shahid Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Comilla. For the reigning champions, Bashundhara Kings, the result marks a stuttering start to their campaign; following a 1-1 draw with Fortis FC in their opener, Mario Gomez’s men remain winless after two matches.
The stalemate carries contrasting implications for both sides. For Mohammedan Sporting Club, led by Alfaz Ahmed, the point takes their tally to five from three matches, significantly bolstering their prospects of progressing to the “Road to Final” stage. Conversely, the Kings find themselves in the uncharacteristic position of fourth in Group B, with a mere two points from two outings, leaving their coaching staff with much to ponder regarding their offensive efficiency.
The first half was characterised by a battle for midfield supremacy, with both sides prioritising possession over high-risk verticality. However, the period was not entirely devoid of drama. In the 12th minute, Mohammedan’s predatory striker Raphael Tudu managed to dispossess Tapu Barman in a dangerous area, only for the veteran Kings defender to recover remarkably well and thwart the danger.
The Kings struggled with their clinical edge despite creating several openings. In the 17th minute, Faysal Ahmed delivered a precise ball into the box, finding Rakib and Sandera in space, yet the duo failed to convert the opportunity. As the half progressed, the Kings’ sustained pressure was repeatedly repelled by a disciplined “Black and White” defensive line.
Mohammedan emerged with greater urgency in the second period, injecting pace into their transitions. Their best opportunity came in the 61st minute when Muzaffarov unleashed a curling free-kick that seemed destined for the back of the net, only for Kings’ custodian Anisur Rahman to produce a sprawling save.
As the match reached its crescendo, Bashundhara Kings threw everything forward. In the 78th minute, Emmanuel Tony met a Faysal Ahmed corner, but his header lacked the power to trouble Sujan in the Mohammedan goal. In the penultimate minute of regulation time, Rahmat Mia produced a desperate, goal-saving block to deny Faysal, ensuring the points were shared.
| Team | Matches Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammedan SC | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 5 |
| Fortis FC | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
| Abahani Ltd. | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 3 |
| Bashundhara Kings | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Chittagong Abahani | 3 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
With the group stage entering its defining phase, Bashundhara Kings must secure victories in their remaining fixtures to ensure they do not face a premature exit from the competition. Mohammedan, meanwhile, sit in a comfortable position, needing only to maintain their discipline to secure a knockout berth.
