A serious threat has emerged against Nazeen Munni, Head of News at Global TV Bangladesh, with demands for her dismissal triggering alarm within the country’s media circles. On the evening of 21 December, several young men reportedly entered the private television channel’s office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, warning management that unless Munni was removed from her post, the office would be set ablaze. The assailants claimed to be members of a group calling itself the “Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.”
According to Nazeen Munni, she was outside the office following an official meeting when, around 8:30 pm, seven to eight individuals arrived at the channel’s premises. They first met with the Managing Director, Ahmed Hossain. While prior contact had been made via telephone, the visitors did not clarify their intentions in advance.
The discussion initially focused on dissatisfaction over the coverage of a recent sensitive incident. Soon, the conversation shifted to Munni herself. The intruders demanded her dismissal, labelling her an “Awami League affiliate.” Ahmed Hossain rejected the claim, stating that Munni had been appointed following proper verification procedures and that no evidence existed linking her to any political party.
According to Munni, the threats then escalated, with the group warning that the office would be torched if their demands were not met. They also attempted to pressure the management into signing a written commitment to terminate her within 48 hours. Although Hossain refused to sign, a colleague accompanying him reportedly did so under duress.
Munni subsequently publicised the incident on social media, emphasising that it represented an ongoing pattern of intimidation aimed at the media. She noted that political pressure had previously forced her to leave workplaces, underscoring the threat to independent journalism.
Rifat Rashid, president of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, acknowledged that a metropolitan chapter member, Prithu, visited the office without central approval, submitting a memorandum. However, he denied that it contained any threats of arson and stated that disciplinary action had been initiated against the member following an internal investigation.
Munni maintains that a concerted effort is underway by certain groups to suppress independent reporting and create an atmosphere of fear. She categorically rejected the political characterisation and vowed not to succumb to intimidation.
