In Assam’s autonomous Karbi Anglong district, north-eastern India, escalating violence has claimed the lives of two individuals, prompting authorities to impose a night-time curfew and suspend mobile internet services across the region.
The unrest stems from a dispute between tribal and non-tribal communities that began earlier this week. On Monday, 22 December, demonstrators reportedly set fire to the ancestral home of Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and a BJP leader.
The following day, Tuesday, 23 December, clashes intensified dramatically. Fires broke out in Kheroni Market, razing the market itself along with several surrounding houses. Numerous vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, were also destroyed. Despite the imposition of curfew, sporadic confrontations continued throughout the day.
The tensions can be traced back to 6 December, when a hunger strike commenced. The protestors claimed that tribal areas had been “encroached upon” by non-tribal communities, including Hindi-speaking settlers, Bengalis, and Nepalis, and demanded the removal of what they described as “outsiders.” On Monday, the police transported the protest leaders, including Tuliram Ronghang, to Guwahati for medical treatment, citing concerns over his deteriorating health.
Assam Police Director General, Harmit Singh, explained to ANI news agency: “The leaders of the hunger strike were taken to Guwahati for treatment on medical advice, as their condition was worsening. Following this, misinformation began circulating that they had been arrested.”
This misinformation reportedly triggered widespread violence. Protestors attempted to seize control of a bridge, and when law enforcement intervened, clashes escalated further. Attackers allegedly hurled bombs and arrows at the police, exacerbating the situation.
Authorities are currently monitoring the situation closely, maintaining the curfew, and deploying additional forces to restore order.
Summary of the Incident:
| Date | Event Description | Casualties/Damage | Authorities’ Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 Dec | Hunger strike begins over tribal land encroachment | None | Police monitoring |
| 22 Dec | Protestors burn Tuliram Ronghang’s ancestral home | Property destroyed | Investigation initiated |

The unrest in Karbi Anglong highlights the fragile balance between tribal and non-tribal populations in Assam, underscoring the need for careful intervention to prevent further loss of life and property.
