Dhaka, 26 December – A proud day for Bangladesh on the international badminton stage, as the UNEX-Sunrise Bangladesh International Series has produced an all-Bangladesh final in the men’s doubles event. Following thrilling semi-final matches on Thursday, two home pairs secured their places in the final, ensuring that the men’s doubles trophy will remain in Bangladesh.
The first semi-final at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium saw compatriots Gourab Singh and Abdul Zahir Tanvir face Al Amin Zumar and Moazzem Hossain Ahidul. In a tightly contested opening set, Gourab and Tanvir fell short, losing 19–21. However, they staged a spectacular comeback in the second set, dominating their opponents 21–8. Riding the momentum, the pair maintained their form in the deciding set, winning 21–15 to secure their place in the final.
The second semi-final delivered even more drama, as Mizanur Rahman and Rahatun Naeem battled against a strong Thai pairing of Kullapat Lothong and Tachine. After dropping the first set 17–21, the Bangladesh duo bounced back 21–13 in the second. The final set became a nerve-wracking contest, with both sides exchanging points fiercely. Mizan and Naeem ultimately triumphed 25–23, booking their spot in the final.
Notably, Al Amin Zumar and Moazzem Hossain Ahidul had recently returned from Toronto, Canada, where they claimed a bronze medal at the UNEX Canadian Challenge. Despite this recent success, they were unable to replicate the feat on home soil. Having progressed past the quarter-finals, they will now settle for the bronze medal in the Bangladesh International Series.
Earlier in the tournament, Al Amin and Moazzem defeated the English-Australian pairing of Wang Yu Hang and Jeui G Jee 21–14, 25–23 in straight sets to reach the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Gourab and Tanvir overcame Vietnam’s Than Dat and Dak Nguyen 21–15, 21–15 to advance, and Mizan and Naeem defeated India’s Atul Kumar and Pradeep Kumar 21–15, 21–16 to claim their semi-final berth.
With Bangladesh’s dominance and consistent performances in men’s doubles, excitement is building ahead of the finals. The tournament’s five finals will commence at 2:00 pm on Friday, with badminton fans eagerly anticipating the men’s doubles showdown—where two formidable Bangladesh pairs will battle to determine the ultimate champions.
