Tarique Rahman Returns Home: Full Programme Announced

After 17 long years in exile, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday, 25 December, marking a highly anticipated homecoming. His arrival has already created a notable stir within the country’s political arena, signalling a potential rejuvenation of his party’s activities.

As part of his initial schedule, Rahman will first pay homage to the late President and BNP founder, Ziaur Rahman, by visiting his grave following Friday prayers. Subsequently, he will offer his respects at the National Memorial (Jatiya Smriti Soudho), demonstrating his recognition of the nation’s historical heritage alongside his political commitments.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, 24 December, Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, confirmed that comprehensive preparations had been made for Tarique Rahman’s return. “His programme is designed not only to highlight his political engagement but also to honour national heritage and historical sites,” Ahmed remarked.

Detailed Schedule: 26–27 December

Salahuddin Ahmed further emphasised that Rahman’s itinerary holds significant political and social importance. Visits to historic gravesites and the National Memorial are expected to symbolise his profound respect for the country, while simultaneously enhancing his public profile as a political leader.

The following day, 27 December, Rahman will pay respects at the grave of Inquilab Munch’s convenor, Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, before casting his vote in the ongoing electoral process. Later, he will visit Pangu Hospital to attend to those injured during the July political unrest, demonstrating both social responsibility and engagement with community welfare.

Political analysts suggest that Rahman’s return after nearly two decades in exile could inject fresh momentum into BNP’s internal cohesion. His activities are expected to strengthen party unity and foster direct connections with ordinary citizens, particularly through participation in civic and commemorative events. The programme’s symbolic combination of religious observances, historical tribute, and voter participation also sends a strong message about the importance of political stability, national heritage, and social engagement.

Observers note that the schedule has drawn considerable attention from party supporters across the country. Thousands of BNP activists and sympathisers have expressed enthusiasm at participating, highlighting the social and cultural significance of Tarique Rahman’s homecoming.

In essence, this two-day programme is seen as both a political and civic milestone, blending heritage, social service, and electoral participation in a manner that underscores Tarique Rahman’s renewed commitment to Bangladesh.
