Keep your heads high when playing against Chelsea, Guardiola said

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has called on his players to keep their heads high ahead of a challenging Premier League clash with Chelsea this Sunday. The Citizens will host the London club at the Etihad Stadium, aiming to consolidate their pursuit of league leaders Arsenal.

City’s recent form has been a mixture of dominance and frustration. In December, City secured a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Sunderland. However, the return fixture at the Stadium of Light on Thursday ended in a goalless draw, leaving some of City’s key attackers—Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva—frustrated. Despite controlling 68% of possession and registering 14 shots, City were unable to find the breakthrough against a resilient Sunderland side.

After the draw, Guardiola praised Sunderland’s performance, stating, “Sunderland are a very good team, especially strong physically. In the first half, we felt their pressing and were under pressure. The second half was much better for us, but we missed the finishing touches in the box.”

City remain four points behind Arsenal at the top of the table after 19 rounds, with the Gunners on 45 points and City on 41. Guardiola acknowledged the need for mental resilience, especially with another demanding fixture coming up. Speaking ahead of the Chelsea game, he said:

“The boys are a bit disappointed, but when we have a tough game against Chelsea in three days, we need to stay alert and keep our heads up.”

Chelsea, currently fifth with 30 points, will present a stern test, but City will have the advantage of home ground. Guardiola’s focus is on regaining confidence and sharpness, particularly in finishing chances—an area that proved costly against Sunderland.
