Following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, United States President Donald Trump has now issued stern warnings to Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, signalling potential escalations in US foreign policy toward Latin America.
Speaking late on Sunday, 5 January, aboard Air Force One, Trump held an informal press briefing in which he hinted at the possibility of military intervention in Colombia. He described Colombia under Petro’s leftist administration as being in a state of “extreme instability,” accusing the government of allowing the country to become a hub for cocaine production and trafficking destined for the United States.
Trump characterised President Petro as an “unwell individual” whose policies have allegedly enabled criminal networks and undermined regional security. “He cannot continue with this course of action for long,” the US President warned, signalling that Washington is closely monitoring developments.
When pressed directly by journalists on whether the United States might launch a military operation in Colombia, Trump responded ambiguously, stating that such a plan “sounds good” to him. While no concrete military orders have been announced, his comments have heightened tensions between the two nations.
Trump also addressed the situation in Cuba, suggesting that direct military intervention might not be necessary there. According to him, Cuba’s current economic collapse—exacerbated by the cessation of Venezuelan oil support—may precipitate a spontaneous government downfall. He added that Cuban-Americans would likely welcome such a change.
Analysts note that these statements come amid a broader Trump strategy to assert US influence in Latin America, particularly targeting left-leaning governments that he perceives as threats to US national security. The remarks have already drawn sharp responses from regional leaders, with calls for diplomatic restraint and dialogue rather than confrontation.
The table below summarises Trump’s recent statements and potential implications for the region:
| Country | Trump’s Assessment | Possible US Action | Key Concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venezuela | Maduro arrested, destabilised | Support for opposition | Regional security and drug trafficking |
| Colombia | Petro ‘unwell’, extreme instability | Potential military option | Cocaine production, governance instability |
| Cuba | Economic collapse imminent | Military intervention unlikely | Government collapse due to economic crisis |
The statements signal a period of heightened US scrutiny over Latin America, raising questions about the future of diplomacy, security, and regional stability in the hemisphere.
