Liverpool manager Arne Slot has revealed that striker Hugo Ekitike remains a doubt ahead of Thursday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The forward, who is currently the Reds’ leading goalscorer this season, was absent from Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Fulham due to a muscle injury and has yet to participate in training this week.
Slot provided an update during his pre-match press conference, emphasising the uncertainty surrounding Ekitike’s availability.
“He hasn’t trained with us up until now. Let’s see if he can train with us today,” Slot explained.
“Two or three days ago, when we played against Fulham, I said he wouldn’t be out for long, but it’s difficult because the games come so fast. He is somewhere in between training with the team or it might take one or two extra days.”
Liverpool’s attacking options are already stretched, with Alexander Isak sidelined due to a broken fibula and Mohamed Salah away representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. The potential absence of Ekitike would leave Slot with a significantly weakened frontline for the high-stakes north London encounter.
| Player | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Hugo Ekitike | Doubtful | Muscle problem |
| Alexander Isak | Out | Broken fibula |
| Mohamed Salah | Out | Africa Cup of Nations |
Despite the setback, Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions and have climbed to fourth place in the Premier League table. Nevertheless, Slot acknowledged criticism of the team’s recent performances, particularly after dropping points in consecutive fixtures.
“It’s nine games unbeaten, but we have definitely had two draws too many,” he admitted.
“We aren’t where we want to be, but we have a very talented squad. If everyone is available and ready, I believe we can achieve something special. We’ve already beaten some very good teams this season, which proves the talent is there, but consistency has been lacking.”
Slot also addressed critiques of Liverpool’s style of play, defending his philosophy while acknowledging room for improvement.
“I want to win as many trophies as I can, but my teams are always known for playing attacking football. We are still trying to do that, and I will continue to encourage an attacking approach,” he said.
Thursday’s clash against Arsenal promises to be a stern test for the Reds, who will be hoping that Ekitike can return to bolster their striking options.
