Request for vessels to exercise caution in river basins due to the possibility of reduced visibility

The Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary forecast warning of significantly reduced visibility across the country’s river basins due to the formation of moderate to dense fog. The advisory, released in the early hours of Friday, highlights potential navigational challenges for inland water transport during the morning and early afternoon.

According to the official forecast, the period of concern extends from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., during which fog conditions may intensify over major river corridors. Meteorologists have indicated that visibility in some areas could fall to 300 metres or even lower, a development that may pose operational risks for vessels travelling along inland waterways.

Fog formation is particularly common during the winter months, when cooler night-time temperatures combine with moisture-laden air above rivers and low-lying basins. In such conditions, the rapid cooling of air near the water surface leads to condensation, resulting in thick fog that can linger well into the late morning hours. Riverine regions are especially vulnerable, as water bodies retain heat overnight, further contributing to atmospheric instability at dawn.

In response to the forecast, authorities have advised all river-going vessels—including passenger ferries, cargo launches, fishing boats, and smaller craft—to proceed with heightened caution. Masters and operators are urged to maintain reduced speeds, ensure proper lookout procedures, and remain alert to sudden changes in visibility, particularly in narrow channels and busy crossings.

Notably, while caution has been strongly emphasised, the advisory clarifies that no formal warning signals are required at this stage. This suggests that although conditions may be challenging, they are not deemed severe enough to warrant suspension of river traffic or the hoisting of danger signals at ports and ghats. Nevertheless, maritime officials stress that vigilance remains essential to prevent collisions or navigational mishaps.

River transport plays a vital role in daily commuting and commercial activity, especially in regions where waterways serve as primary transport routes. Even brief disruptions caused by adverse weather can have cascading effects on schedules, trade, and passenger safety. As such, operators are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and maintain communication with local river authorities throughout the day.

The Meteorological Department continues to observe weather patterns closely and has assured that further updates will be issued should conditions deteriorate. Until visibility improves, river users are reminded that prudence, patience, and preparedness remain the safest course of action.
