Activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League staged an unexpected flash demonstration carrying black flags in Netrokona’s Purbadhala on Friday morning, briefly taking over a section of the regional highway before rapidly dispersing.
The demonstration unfolded shortly after quarter to eight in the morning in the Hiranpur Bazar area along the Netrokona-Mymensingh highway. Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of young men converged abruptly on the thoroughfare, catching local traders and morning commuters by surprise. Brandishing black flags and holding political banners, the participants marched down the road whilst chanting party slogans. The entire gathering lasted barely five minutes before the demonstrators scattered swiftly, fleeing the scene on motorcycles, battery-run easy-bikes, and CNG-powered auto-rickshaws to evade security forces.
Footage of the event, captured in a one-minute and fifty-three-second video clip, surfaced rapidly on social media platforms, particularly Facebook. The recording shows over fifty activists marching briskly through the marketplace under the leadership of Solaiman Hossain, president of the Purbadhala upazila unit of the student organisation. The video was widely circulated across online networks and shared by accounts linked to leaders and activists of the Awami League, the Chhatra League, and their associate bodies.
Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, described how the sudden gathering broke the early morning calm of the marketplace. The brief assembly appeared meticulously coordinated to ensure a swift public appearance and immediate dispersal before law enforcement could intervene on the ground.
Police authorities confirmed that they are actively looking into the incident. Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Officer-in-Charge of Purbadhala Police Station, told members of the press that law enforcement had taken cognisance of the unauthorised demonstration.
Investigating officers are currently scrutinising the video footage circulating online and interviewing local shopkeepers and residents to formally verify the identities of all individuals who took part in the march. The police administration has mobilised teams to conduct targeted drives to apprehend the demonstrators, whilst legal preparations are underway at the local police station to file a formal case in connection with the unsanctioned assembly. Security vigilance across key points of the highway and adjoining commercial centres has been intensified to pre-empt similar flash demonstrations.
