Tarique Rahman Postpones Northern Tour Following Election Commission Request

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially announced the postponement of Chairman Tarique Rahman’s scheduled tour of the northern districts following a formal request from the Election Commission. This strategic pause comes amidst a volatile political atmosphere, with the party alleging that a conspiratorial circle is actively working to undermine and sabotage the credibility of the upcoming national polls.

Following an emergency meeting of the BNP’s National Standing Committee at the party’s Gulshan office on Friday night, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed the press. He confirmed that the tour, which was slated to commence on 11 January, was intended to be a solemn journey. The itinerary included paying respects at the graves of national leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and the martyrs of the 2024 student-led uprising, including the iconic figure Abu Sayeed, alongside fulfilling various familial obligations.

Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating security situation, Mirza Fakhrul asserted that a specific quarter is orchestrating violence to disrupt the electoral environment. “You are well aware that a certain circle is hatching plots in various ways to question and derail the election scheduled for February,” he stated. The BNP highlighted a series of targeted killings, specifically citing the recent assassinations of Sharif Osman bin Hadi and Azizur Rahman Musabbir, as evidence of a calculated attempt to spread terror before the polls.

The BNP leadership issued a stern condemnation of these acts of violence, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. They warned that if such bloodshed continues, the prospect of a free, fair, and peaceful election will remain an impossibility. The party has repeatedly urged the government and the Election Commission to take visible, effective measures to improve law and order and ensure the safety of all political participants.

The emergency meeting concluded with a broader discussion on the party’s organisational readiness and the overall democratic health of the nation. BNP leaders maintain that any escalation in instability will only serve to obstruct the democratic process, a transition they believe is vital for the country’s future.
