Anthony Semenyo has made an electrifying start to his Manchester City career, sparking memories of a 17-year-old record last achieved by Emmanuel Adebayor. The Ghanaian winger joined City from Bournemouth last week in a £6.5 million transfer and marked his debut with a goal, immediately signalling his intent to make an impact.
Semenyo opened his scoring account in City’s 10–1 demolition of Exeter in the FA Cup, a match that highlighted the team’s attacking prowess and set the tone for the winger’s promising future at the club.
Maintaining his scoring momentum, Semenyo netted again in only his second match. Last night, in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park, he scored the opening goal in City’s 2–0 victory over Newcastle United. By scoring in his first two appearances, Semenyo has mirrored a feat last accomplished by Emmanuel Adebayor in August 2009, who also scored in his opening two matches for City.
However, the match against Newcastle was not without controversy. Semenyo had scored a second goal that was later disallowed after an extended VAR review, sparking debates among fans and pundits alike. Despite this, the winger remains confident in his adaptation to the club.
“I feel at home here,” Semenyo said. “The environment is incredible. Everyone is confident and wants to achieve something great. I’ve been welcomed by the team, and that support gives me extra motivation to perform at my best.”
City captain Bernardo Silva expressed frustration over the disallowed third goal, stating, “The match should have been 3–0. Unfortunately, we’ve grown accustomed to these decisions going against us. It’s very disappointing, especially considering how last time here, some calls didn’t go our way either.”
Looking ahead, Manchester City will host Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on 4 February for the second leg, with City holding a two-goal advantage.
