Bangladesh is preparing for a crucial friendly match ahead of its final fixture in the Asian Cup qualifiers, scheduled for 31 March against Singapore. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is exploring options to give the national team additional match practice before this important encounter, with the game likely to be held in Sylhet, the home district of star midfielder Hamza Chowdhury.
On Saturday, the National Team Committee convened to discuss preparations for the friendly as well as the upcoming national team training camp. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Media Committee Chairman Amirul Islam Babu said, “The national team camp will commence on 20 March. We are in discussions with several potential opponents, and there is a plan to host a home match. If confirmed, Sylhet is a likely venue.”
Preliminary discussions indicate that Bangladesh’s prospective opponents for the friendly match could include Cambodia or Timor-Leste. According to BFF sources, negotiations are ongoing with Cambodia, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. While Vietnam, ranked higher in Asia, has shown limited interest in facing Bangladesh, Timor-Leste has expressed willingness to play either home or away. Cambodia appears more inclined to host the match on their own turf.
The BFF is expected to formally confirm the opponent and match details within the coming days. Meanwhile, the Maldives has extended an invitation for Bangladesh to participate in a four-nation tournament during the June international window, but no decision was taken on this matter during Saturday’s committee meeting.
| Opponent | Asian Ranking | Interest in Match | Preferred Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cambodia | Low | High | Home |
| Timor-Leste | Mid | Flexible | Home or Away |
| Vietnam | High | Low | Not specified |
This friendly match is expected to play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s preparation, allowing the team to fine-tune tactics, integrate emerging talents, and build momentum ahead of the decisive qualifier against Singapore. Hosting the match in Sylhet could also provide an added advantage, given the support of local fans for key national players like Hamza Chowdhury.
The BFF aims to confirm the fixture within days, providing the team with ample time for tactical and physical preparation ahead of the March showdown.
