Lahore — Attention at Gaddafi Stadium was high today following the toss of the Pakistan–Australia T20 match, as fans and media alike anticipated a key spectacle: the unveiling of Pakistan’s official T20 World Cup jersey. According to Pakistani media reports, the ceremony, which was scheduled immediately after the toss, did not take place.
Geo News has reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed the jersey launch. While no official reason has been disclosed, a source close to the board cited “unavoidable circumstances” as the cause. The development comes amid speculation over Pakistan’s potential boycott of the World Cup in protest against what some officials perceive as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) inconsistent policies.
A PCB insider told Geo News that the jersey unveiling was planned for after the toss of the second T20 match against Australia. “However, due to unavoidable circumstances, the event has been postponed,” the source said.
The postponement occurs in a tense context surrounding security concerns and ICC decisions. In the past, venues for India–Pakistan matches have been changed due to safety issues. This time, however, the ICC’s refusal to relocate matches for Bangladesh despite similar security warnings has drawn criticism from the PCB. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the board is reviewing Pakistan’s participation in the tournament in light of what it considers the regulator’s double standards. A final decision on Pakistan’s involvement is expected on Monday.
According to the tournament schedule, Pakistan is set to begin their campaign on 7 February against the Netherlands. The team is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, the United States, and Namibia, with all matches scheduled to take place in Colombo. Pakistan announced their 15-member World Cup squad on 25 January. Speaking on whether Pakistan’s participation was confirmed, selector Aaqib Javed emphasised, “Our responsibility is to select the team; whether the team plays or not is a board decision.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will not be participating in this edition of the T20 World Cup. Despite requests from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to shift matches to Sri Lanka due to security concerns in India, the ICC did not approve the change. Scotland has subsequently taken Bangladesh’s place in the tournament.
The current situation has created considerable uncertainty among fans and analysts, with Pakistan’s final participation still hanging in the balance. The jersey launch, originally expected to energise supporters, has now become a symbol of the ongoing tensions surrounding the tournament’s governance.
