Ronaldo Rumoured to Boycott Al Nassr Match

Speculation is mounting over the state of relations between Cristiano Ronaldo and his current club, Al Nassr. The Portuguese superstar is reportedly set to miss today’s Saudi Pro League clash against Al Riyadh, scheduled for 9:15 PM Bangladesh time.

Initially, it was suggested that the 39-year-old forward would sit out to rest ahead of a crucial encounter against reigning champions Al Ittihad next Friday. However, insider reports indicate that Ronaldo’s absence is not due to any physical ailment. Instead, the reasons appear to be rooted in deep-seated dissatisfaction with the club’s internal management and investment strategies.

A source within Al Nassr told A Bola that Ronaldo is particularly displeased with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which effectively controls four of Saudi Arabia’s top football clubs, including Al Nassr and rivals Al Hilal. The forward reportedly believes that Al Nassr is being unfairly prioritised less than clubs such as Al Hilal, resulting in limited squad reinforcements.

As team captain, Ronaldo is concerned about the club’s approach to player acquisitions. Under coach Jorge Jesus, Al Nassr has only signed a single player during this winter transfer window: 21-year-old Iraqi midfielder Haider Abdul Karim. Meanwhile, administrative changes have stripped significant powers from two Portuguese executives, Sporting Director Simao Coutinho and CEO Jose Semedo, further fueling the star’s frustration.

Comparatively, Al Nassr’s rivals are strengthening aggressively:

Club New Signings Source Estimated Cost (EUR) Notes
Al Nassr Haider Abdul Karim Iraq N/A Only winter acquisition
Al Hilal Pablo Mari Fiorentina N/A Experienced centre-back
Al Hilal Kader Meite Rennes 3,000,000 Young French forward
Al Hilal Simon Buaabrek Unknown 30,000,000 High-profile transfer under Inzaghi

Reports also suggest that rumours of Karim Benzema potentially leaving Al Ittihad for Al Hilal have further soured Ronaldo’s mood. In addition, Italian coach Simone Inzaghi’s Al Hilal has invested heavily in new talent, signalling the club’s serious ambition to dominate the league.

Ronaldo’s potential boycott is not the first sign of unrest at Al Nassr. In mid-January, coach Jorge Jesus publicly stated that “Al Nassr’s political influence is not on par with Al Hilal’s,” prompting Al Hilal authorities to seek a six-month to one-year ban for the coach.

If Ronaldo does sit out today’s match, it would underscore growing tensions within Al Nassr, highlighting the star’s dissatisfaction with both administrative decisions and the club’s relative lack of investment compared to its rivals. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely, as any public protest from one of football’s most prominent figures could have wider implications for the Saudi Pro League.
