In a remarkable act of parental accountability, a father in Chandpur District has handed over his own son to law enforcement due to repeated criminal activities and drug addiction. The father, former councillor Ahijul Munshi, surrendered his son, Ashraful, to the authorities at Motlob South Police Station on Friday, 20 February, in the Noluya village of Motlob municipality.
Ahijul Munshi explained that his son had been engaged in theft and other criminal activities for an extended period. “Despite repeated warnings, he continued to associate with drug-addicted youths and commit unlawful acts,” Munshi said. “His persistent misconduct has not only brought dishonour to our family but has also caused distress among relatives. I can no longer maintain my reputation in society due to the shame he has inflicted. To guide him back from this destructive path, I was compelled to place him in the hands of the police.”
Local residents confirmed that Ashraful had repeatedly been the subject of informal community arbitration, or shalishi, for theft and drug-related offences. Neighbours reported that he often brought outsiders into the area to commit misdeeds, unsettling the local community. On the night of 18 February, Ashraful, accompanied by two others, allegedly broke into a local shop, escalating concerns over his increasingly dangerous behaviour.
Neighbours and family alike expressed frustration at the repeated dishonour and anxiety caused by Ashraful’s actions. “He created fear and unrest in the community, and his family suffered humiliation multiple times,” said a local resident who requested anonymity. “Ultimately, his father had no choice but to involve the police directly.”
Motlob South Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Hafizur Rahman Manik confirmed the surrender. “The father brought his son to the station and formally handed him over. Legal proceedings are now underway,” he stated.

Community members have praised Ahijul Munshi’s decision as a difficult but responsible step towards restoring peace and discipline within the locality. The case also highlights growing concerns about youth involvement in drugs and criminal activity in the region. Authorities have urged parents to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing similar issues before they escalate.
