Patuyakhali’s Mirzaganj Upazila has been rocked by a serious incident involving the alleged assault of a fruit trader over a purported extortion attempt. The incident has sparked widespread concern in the area, with the local political backdrop intensifying public unease.
The victim, 50-year-old fruit merchant Nirmal Das, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Upazila Health Complex after sustaining significant injuries. According to Mr Das, he has been conducting his business at Subidkhali Market honestly for many years. However, he claims that over the past few months, Sujan Sikder, the Organisational Secretary of the local BNP branch, along with his associates, repeatedly demanded five lakh taka from him.
When Mr Das refused to comply, he alleges that threats were made against his college-going son, Rittik Das, including threats of false drug allegations. Additionally, he claims attempts were made to tarnish his family’s reputation in the community through malicious rumours.
Describing the incident, Mr Das said that on Sunday evening, while walking from his home to his shop, he was intercepted by Mr Sikder and his associates. “They demanded the extortion money, and when I refused, they physically assaulted me. They wrapped a scarf around my neck and dragged me along the street,” he said. Local residents intervened and rushed him to the Upazila Health Complex, from where he was later referred to Barisal for advanced treatment on Monday afternoon. Following the assault, Mr Das filed a formal complaint with the local police station.
Sujan Sikder has denied the allegations, stating that his only involvement was to address concerns about alleged drug use by Rittik Das. “We informed the police and the Department of Narcotics Control. The altercation only escalated after some words were exchanged,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, the president of Mirzaganj BNP, Sahabuddin Nannu, stressed that the party would not take responsibility for individual misconduct. “The law enforcement authorities will take appropriate action,” he stated. Mirzaganj Police Station OC Md. A. Salam confirmed that written complaints have been received from both parties. He added that no formal case has yet been filed against Rittik Das, and that investigations are ongoing to determine the necessary legal measures.
