Ukraine to Build 4,000km Drone Shield to Counter Russia

In a strategic move to neutralise the escalating threat of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Ukraine has announced an ambitious infrastructure project to install 4,000 kilometres of anti-drone netting across its most vulnerable road networks. Mikhailo Fedorov, the Minister for Digital Transformation, confirmed on Wednesday that the government is rapidly accelerating the deployment of these protective barriers to secure military supply lines and civilian corridors.

A Growing Aerial Menace

The conflict has seen Russia increasingly deploy remote-controlled aircraft to strike deep behind Ukrainian lines, targeting military logistics, hospitals, and critical infrastructure. These “kamikaze” and reconnaissance drones have made movement near the front lines exceptionally hazardous. The proposed netting serves as a physical interceptor, designed to entangle a drone’s propellers and neutralise it before it can reach high-value military assets or civilian targets.

Rapid Deployment and Strategic Funding

To support this massive undertaking, the Ukrainian government has allocated an additional 1.6 billion hryvnia (approximately $37 million) from the national budget. This investment is already yielding results; Minister Fedorov noted a significant uptick in the pace of construction over the first two months of 2026.

Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Fedorov highlighted the operational progress:

“In just one month, we increased our pace from five kilometres per day in January to 12 kilometres per day in February. This has significantly enhanced the safety of military movement and ensured the stable operation of front-line communities.”

Expansion Projections for 2026

Month Current/Projected Daily Coverage Total Annual Target
January 2026 5 km / day
February 2026 12 km / day
March 2026 20 km / day (Projected)
Year-End Goal Accelerated Pace 4,000 km

Strengthening the Northern Frontier

Beyond the installation of road-based netting, the Ministry is prioritising the fortification of the north-eastern and northern regions. Areas such as Kharkiv and Sumy, which share a direct border with Russia, alongside the northern Chernihiv region, are seeing an acceleration in the construction of broader defensive infrastructure.

These “drone nets” are not merely passive obstacles; they represent a cost-effective solution to a high-tech problem. While sophisticated electronic warfare and surface-to-air missiles are used for larger threats, these nets provide a vital, low-tech safety net for soldiers and civilians alike, preventing Russian loitering munitions from turning arterial roads into death traps.

As the pace of construction reaches its 20-kilometre-a-day target in March, the Ukrainian government hopes to significantly dampen the efficacy of Russian aerial surveillance and tactical strikes by the end of the year.
