Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a prominent figure in the parliamentary opposition, has issued a formal statement denouncing the recent wave of military escalations in the Middle East. While the statement offers a stern critique of the attacks on Iranian soil, analysts have noted a deliberate piece of diplomatic “strategic ambiguity”: the Jamaat leader pointedly refrained from naming the United States of America as a direct aggressor.
In a press release issued on Sunday, Dr Rahman expressed his unequivocal disapproval of any actions that violate national sovereignty, endanger civilian lives, or destabilise regional peace. However, the scope of his condemnation was not limited to the initial US-Israeli strikes. The Ameer also voiced his opposition to Iran’s subsequent retaliatory barrages—consisting of ballistic missiles and loitering munitions—which targeted neighbouring Gulf nations hosting American military installations.
“We consider Iran’s counter-strikes against fraternal regional and Gulf nations to be both counter-productive and escalatory,” Dr Rahman stated. He further urged an immediate cessation of such kinetic actions, warning that the expansion of the theatre of war would only exacerbate the suffering of innocent civilians.
While the statement expressed “grave concern” regarding Israel’s destabilising activities, it stopped short of a direct confrontation with Washington’s role in the crisis. Furthermore, the statement approached the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with a generalised legalistic lens rather than a personal eulogy.
Dr Rahman noted a “deeply concerning trend” where national leaders and heads of state are increasingly targeted in defiance of international legal frameworks. He warned that such extrajudicial actions set “dangerous precedents” that undermine global norms and push the international order toward permanent chaos and lawlessness.
| Policy Area | Official Stance / Action Demanded |
|---|---|
| US involvement | Omitted from direct naming; referenced via “aggression.” |
| Israeli Actions | Identified as a primary source of regional instability. |
| Iranian Retaliation | Condemned as “ineffective” and a threat to Gulf brotherhood. |
| Khamenei’s Death | Framed as a violation of international law and sovereign immunity. |
| Diplomatic Path | Urgent call for all parties to return to “dialogue and diplomacy.” |
Turning his attention to domestic responsibilities, the Jamaat Ameer called upon the Government of Bangladesh to prioritise the safety of its sizeable expatriate workforce currently residing in the Middle East. He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to initiate “comprehensive and coordinated consular assistance” to ensure the protection and potential repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals caught in the crossfire.
The statement concludes with a plea for global powers to exercise maximum restraint, suggesting that the current trajectory of the conflict threatens to dismantle the very foundations of international stability.
