Butler Proud Despite China Defeat

Bangladesh’s historic debut at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup ended in a 2–0 defeat to reigning champions China women’s national football team, yet the result told only part of the story. In a spirited display against one of the continent’s most formidable sides, the Bangladeshi players earned widespread praise for their resilience, organisation and ambition.

Head coach Peter Butler expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, despite the loss. Facing the defending champions was always likely to be a formidable assignment, but Bangladesh refused to be overawed. They competed with determination throughout the 90 minutes, limiting China’s opportunities and showing flashes of attacking intent.

China, guided by head coach Ante Milicic, secured victory with two well-taken goals. Milicic admitted that while he was pleased to begin the tournament with a win and a clean sheet, he had hoped for a wider margin of victory. Nevertheless, he reserved special praise for Bangladesh’s performance, particularly their goalkeeper.

In a notable tactical decision, Butler opted to start Mili Akter in goal in place of regular first-choice keeper Rupna Chakma. The move raised eyebrows, including those of the Chinese bench. Milicic confessed he was surprised to see Mili in the starting line-up but commended her assured display between the posts.

“We were surprised to see Mili starting,” Milicic remarked after the match. “However, she performed very well.”

At the post-match press conference, Milicic reflected on his team’s performance with measured satisfaction.

“Bangladesh played without pressure and expressed themselves freely,” he said. “Scoring two goals and conceding none in the opening match is pleasing. The first match of a tournament can always be unpredictable.”

Butler, meanwhile, highlighted the broader significance of the occasion.

“China are one of Asia’s finest sides — perhaps the very best — and the current champions,” he noted. “They deserved their win and I congratulate them. Before the match, I told the players to give everything and demonstrate their capabilities.”

The Bangladesh coach was particularly pleased that his team did not retreat into a purely defensive shell.

“We did not come here merely to defend,” he explained. “That is not how I coach, and it is not how I want my team to play. The players have honoured the shirt and represented their country with pride. This performance shows how far we have progressed.”

Butler defended his decision to start Mili Akter, emphasising his willingness to make bold calls when necessary.

“Mili was outstanding today. I wanted to introduce change and I am not afraid to take such decisions. I am pleased that we were not disgraced.”

Looking ahead, Butler struck an optimistic tone. He described the tournament as a valuable platform for his players to showcase their talent and potentially transform their futures.

“I feel genuinely fortunate to coach these players. This competition offers them an opportunity to shine and improve their lives. We have overcome many challenges to reach this stage. Now we must rise again and continue moving forward.”

Though the scoreboard favoured China, Bangladesh’s determined display signalled a promising chapter in their footballing journey.
