Tensions flared in Jhenaidah following the death of a young man during a dispute with petrol pump employees, leading to violent unrest in the city. On Saturday night, three buses were set ablaze and a filling station was vandalised, though fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The incidents occurred in the Arappur area of Jhenaidah, primarily around two petrol stations and the central bus terminal. Local sources and the Fire Service reported that the disturbances unfolded in stages:
8:00 p.m. – A confrontation at Taj Filling Station escalated when the deceased youth, identified as Nirob, was reportedly assaulted by employees while collecting fuel. This triggered anger among local residents.
1:00 a.m. – Residents attacked the Srijoni Filling Station in Arappur, causing significant property damage.
Around 3:00 a.m. – Three buses parked at the central bus terminal were set on fire. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to control the blaze after nearly 30 minutes.
Authorities have confirmed that no one was injured during the unrest.

Mahafuz Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police for Jhenaidah Sadar Circle, confirmed the incidents. “Three buses at the bus terminal were set on fire by miscreants, and Srijoni Filling Station was vandalised. We are investigating the matter thoroughly, and legal action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.
The Fire Service added that damage assessments are ongoing and perpetrators will be identified following investigation.
The violence has sparked concern among local residents, who fear further unrest in the city. Law enforcement and emergency services were deployed swiftly to restore order and prevent escalation. The incidents underline the volatility that can arise from disputes at public service points, particularly when tensions involve the loss of life.
Authorities have urged calm and requested that residents avoid taking matters into their own hands while investigations continue. Meanwhile, both petrol stations and the bus terminal remain under heightened security to prevent further incidents.
The Jhenaidah events serve as a stark reminder of how quickly local disputes can escalate into broader civil disturbances, highlighting the need for swift law enforcement response and community restraint.
