UAE Arrests 35 Over Iran War Misinformation

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have detained 35 individuals, including a Bangladeshi national, for allegedly spreading false information and fabricated content about a potential war involving Iran. The arrests, carried out across various regions including the capital Abu Dhabi, follow heightened surveillance of digital platforms in recent days.

The detainees comprise nationals from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Nepal. According to a statement issued by the office of UAE Attorney General Dr Hamad Saif Al Shams, the accused are suspected of disseminating artificial videos and false narratives aimed at inciting public disorder and undermining national stability.

“These measures were taken following rigorous monitoring of digital platforms to prevent the spread of fabricated information and artificially generated content intended to disturb public order and threaten national stability,” Dr Al Shams said.

The UAE considers the dissemination of rumours and false information a criminal offence. Under the country’s penal code, individuals found guilty can face a minimum of one year in prison and a fine of at least 100,000 dirhams.

Authorities have begun interrogating the detainees. Dr Al Shams highlighted that the individuals uploaded AI-generated fake videos through their social media accounts and other online platforms. “The government regards such actions not only as a threat to public stability but also as a significant risk to national security,” he added.

The UAE government has been increasingly vigilant in monitoring online content, particularly material that could incite panic or misinformation regarding international conflicts. Digital surveillance and AI-driven detection methods are being employed to curb the circulation of such content.
