New Zealand’s T20 campaign has hit a rocky start after a heavy opening defeat to South Africa, and the situation has worsened with injury concerns emerging from their camp. The Black Caps were bowled out for just 91 runs in the first Twenty20 International (T20I), eventually losing by seven wickets.
Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has suffered a fractured elder finger during a pre-match bowling session at Mount Maunganui, ruling him out of the entire five-match series. Medical scans confirmed the fracture, with recovery expected to take approximately four weeks. Sodhi’s absence leaves New Zealand’s spin attack significantly weakened, forcing the team to rely on Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie for spin support in Hamilton and Auckland.
Although Lockie Ferguson has joined the squad, New Zealand Cricket has not yet called up a direct replacement for Sodhi. For the remaining matches, the squad will also be reinforced by Caden Clark, Dane Cleaver, Jayden Lennox, and Tom Latham, who will take over leadership responsibilities from Santner.
The opening defeat highlighted New Zealand’s fragility under pressure, particularly in batting. South Africa’s disciplined bowling and composed batting line-up exposed the gaps in the Black Caps’ innings, setting a challenging tone for the series.
